Despite large-scale US bombing beginning in April and the mining of North Vietnamese ports in May, petroleum imports reached at least 390,000 metric tons in 1972, close to the record high set a year earlier. The mining and bombing, however, resulted in increased consumption by North Vietnam's transport sectors, and this caused year-end stocks to fall to their lowest level in recent years...
